  • THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- For its first hour way too reminiscent of the first movie only with Lum and Ataru's positions reversed and with weaker humor, banal plotting, worse pacing, and inferior new characters. The last half-hour is better. Repeating the game of tag that brought Lum and Ataru together only this time focused on their relationship is a neat book-end and reversal; usually it's Lum chasing Ataru, and while the first tag game resolved in a misunderstanding of Ataru's feeling over what he said, this second resolves in a correct understanding of his feelings despite what he didn't say. The way the instability in their relationship is finally brought to a head is also a decent way to do a supposedly "final" story, although that's not true in fact nor spirit. I just wish the transition between these two distinct parts of the film was better handled. It's almost as if the first part was being played as a typical Urusei Yatsura adventure then it unexpectedly discarded that and suddenly became seriously about Ataru and Lum. Such intentionally jarring plotting would have worked fine, but it's not really what's going on. The plot device of the fake Lum which is so important to setting off the second phase of the story is too dumb to abide and it would probably have needed to more overtly drop the plot it spent so much time on. As it is, Rupa's grandfather suddenly talks abou...
